GERARD MATES
Spanish director based in Mexico City
Gerard was born in Barcelona and, after studying Telecommunications Engineering, decided to pursue his true passion: filmmaking. He studied at the Sydney International Film School, where he began to shape his voice as a filmmaker.
His primary goal is to use cinema as a tool to highlight social causes and raise awareness, particularly regarding the LGBT+ community.
In 2025, Gerard won a Silver award at the London International Awards for the campaign 'Más que palabras' (More Than Words) in the Best Direction category—an accolade that solidified his reputation for a sensitive and socially conscious approach behind the camera.
His short film 'Qué verán los dragones en chicas como yo' (What Dragons See in Girls Like Me)—winner of awards at various international festivals—earned him recognition for his inventiveness in reimagining classic dragon-and-princess myths for the modern era, offering an original exploration of how the fantastic can reflect contemporary dilemmas.
Gerard is currently writing his first feature film, a project that blends the intimate with the fantastic to further explore the boundaries between the body, memory, and transformation.
